Skookum Chuck

Skookum Chuck by Stewart Edward White – The novel’s central character, a thirty-something fellow of independent means named Roger Marshal, seeks out a mysterious man who professes to be a healer of souls. Marshal claims he has been mired in a state of complete indifference to life for five years and has found no solution to the condition after endless searching. The man expresses confidence that he can help Marshall and makes a highly unusual offer — if he succeeds, Marshal will owe him nothing. If he fails, the fee will be $10,000. And Marshall must unquestionably obey everything the man tells him to do for the months required for a cure. The resulting adventures spread across the wild scenery and seascapes of British Columbia, unhurriedly but steadily building to an unexpected ending.
